CARTOON NETWORK COMMISIONS ALL-NEW SHORTS

Animation Insider - Get Inside Animation News and Reviews: "CARTOON NETWORK COMMISIONS ALL-NEW SHORTS By Vincent Benenati

Cartoon Network, seeking to find the next young, hot talent in animation, has decided to revisit the creation of Cartoon Cartoons shorts. The network announced today a plan to commission an initial 20 original shorts covering a wide variety of animation styles and format. Much like its original World Premiere Toons project, the purpose of this new multi-million dollar program will be to produce a series of fully animated "pilots" over the next two years that will serve to identify exciting new characters and creative situations suitable for full-series development. Linda Simensky, Cartoon Network senior vice president of original animation will serve as executive producer of the project under the supervision of Bob Higgins, Cartoon Network senior vice president of programming and development.

"Cartoon Network's powerful original programming franchise was initially built on successful shorts produced through the ground-breaking 1994 World Premiere Toons project," said Samples. "At the time, Hanna-Barbera Studios was the first production house ever to have conceived and created a formal shorts program. Since then, due to its overwhelming success, other companies have adopted similar programs. With our ratings and target audience delivery now stronger than ever thanks to the heavy acquisition schedule we enacted this year as well as the success of Codename: Kids Next Door, Teen Titans and Duck Dodgers, we now have the luxury once again to invest in new talent with strong potential for creating hit new original series."

Simensky and the Cartoon Network original animation team will begin accepting concept submissions as of Oct. 1. Production of the Cartoon Cartoon Shorts program will be supervised and resourced through Cartoon Network Studios, the network's 45,000 square foot production facility located in Burbank, Calif."

Bronze Peanuts Characters' Statues Unveiled in St. Paul

kare11.com : Minneapolis, St. Paul: "Bronze Peanuts Characters' Statues Unveiled in St. Paul

Three bronze 'Peanuts' statues have been installed in Landmark Plaza in downtown St. Paul as a tribute to the late cartoonist Charles Schulz. The Minnesota native created the 'Peanuts' comic strip.

The sculptures are about four feet high and are designed to be child-safe with no sharp edges or small nooks where tiny hands or feet could get caught.

The statues are of Charlie Brown seated with Snoopy on his lap, Schroeder playing his piano with Lucy leaning across the piano, and Linus and Sally looking over a stone wall. A fourth statue still in the works will feature Marcie and Peppermint Patty.

Schulz died on February 12, 2000, the night before his final installment of the strip was published in newspapers around the world. 'Peanuts' strips from past years continue to run in many newspapers.
The city raised $1 million for the bronze statues by auctioning off polyurethane Peanuts sculptures that were set up around town during the past four summers.

Buttons

Buttons: "Steal These Buttons, Too
The inspiration for these came from Raging Platypus, who got the idea from Antipixel. While I couldn't make the font as small as do their graphics, I could at least emulate the spirit of the button designs using text and CSS. I realize others have done this too. The more, the merrier! Oh, and I didn't try to do all of the Plat's buttons, either because I was feeling lazy or because I didn't have any interest in them. You can of course build on this work if you're so inclined. Don't like the shade of blue I used for the W3C buttons? Fill in your own. Change the colors, the font, the way the buttons are presented, or anything else you wish. "

Other way to replace image-buttons with text-only ones. All these buttons are just textual links styled by CSS. For they are formated as inlines, they can be placed within the text, as well as treated as text - you can put them into lists, justify them (center, right), float them etc. "

Antipixel | Blog | Steal These Buttons: "Not being very clever or technically inclined, I’m disappointed that I can’t bestow some brilliant gift on the web sites of the world like proper quotes or an RSS validator or a whole stable of brilliant plug-ins. Setting my sights considerably lower, however, I realise there’s perhaps one small thing…
I’ve never liked the orange XML button that’s everywhere these days, so when I started Antipixel I made my own. (Not a nice font, it’s poorly set, and at 430-odd bytes, it’s larger than it needs to be – nothing personal against whoever designed it, I’m just fussy this way.) The W3C’s validation buttons suck big eggs, so I made my own versions of those as well. I’ve received a bunch of positive feedback about the Antipixel buttons, so I’m giving them away.
If you want them, they’re yours, gratis, no strings attached."

Guardian Unlimited | The Guardian | Why I love... the Drunken Bakers: "Why I love...

...the Drunken Bakers

Steve Lowe
Wednesday September 17, 2003
The Guardian

Comedy drunks have been around since drinks began, but few have been so utterly forlorn as The Drunken Bakers. As the name suggests, this cartoon strip - a semi-regular feature in that fine comic institution, Viz - concerns some bakers who get drunk. The essentials don't vary much: the average black-and-white, page-long episode sees a customer coming in with a simple request for, say, a wedding cake or some buns. With the best of intentions, the sweet-looking, white-haired pair head out back to gather ingredients and mix dough. But soon, one will quietly suggest a little drop of something - Drambuie or gin, perhaps - and the other will stoically agree. Before long, they're both staggering round a smoke-filled bakery surrounded by empty spirits bottles. Again. It's tricky to say what's so appealing about their slide from being worthy citizens to utterly wrecked lost souls. Writer Barney Farmer and artist Lee Heaney imbue the strips with a real sense of despondency; these aren't drunks who have convivial escapades or adventures - they are drunks who drink, get drunk, pass out and burn the cakes. And being bakers somehow makes it worse: it seems such a wholesome occupation. Recently, one baker headed off for supplies and, in the next speech-free frame, was shown on his hands and knees in a shopping centre surrounded by liquid oozing out from a mess of broken glass and polythene. The look of sad befuddlement on his face was kind of moving. So, yes, clearly there are limits, plot-wise. But I'm hoping that for some while longer, Viz continues to show us the non-exploits of two bakers who, tragically, never quite manage to bake."

Console Gaming World - Selfboot Tutorial

Console Gaming World - Selfboot Tutorial: "Dreamcast Self-Boot Tutorial - (C) Echelon 2000!

Introduction:

Since we find it a bit stupid to re-release nearly 200 DC titles over again, and waste the bandwidth of FTP's and end-users, We thought we would release a tutorial & toolset with which you can convert all of your old Utopia loader games to the newer self-boot format.

Limitations:

Self-Boot and Multisession code requires 3 Minutes of Overhead on the CD you are burning. So, if you are burning to an 80 Minute CD, Your data must be approximately 77 Minutes, If you are burning to a 74 Minute CD, Your data must be approximately 71 Minutes. If the data is over this size, Your burn will fail. Many end-users claimed they could easily rip games and downsize them, but didn't know to read in GD-ROMs. So here is your chance to prove your theories, Go ahead and rip down the games you are trying to burn by 3 Minutes if they are Full CDs."

DreamFAQ: Sega Dreamcast Burning / Backup FAQ

DreamFAQ: Sega Dreamcast Burning / Backup FAQ: "

1. Introduction and Brief History of the DC Scene

The Sega Dreamcast was released in the USA on Sep 9 1999, the Utopia Boot CD was created by Wildlight of Utopia and was released on Jun 22 2000. It ushered in the age of Dreamcast piracy, with Utopia releasing Dead or Alive 2 and Soul Calibur in the next two days, then Kalisto released Evolution on the 26th and continued to flood the DC scene with games, mastering the art of the self boot and DiscJuggler with their release of Dynamite Cop on Aug 19 2000, until Sept 02 2000, when they called it quits, claiming Sega had offered them stock options to stop releasing DC games (note that their other console groups like the PSX remained and remain in full swing.) Only 2 days afterwards, Echelon released Flag to Flag CART Racing, and quickly filled in the gap left by Kalisto, releasing most of the major games in the scene and going forth with new tools like the Echelon Selfboot Kit. Kalisto came out of hiding on Nov 09 2000 to release the highly anticipated 4-CD Shenmue. Eurasia, Hooligans, Paradox, Paradiso, Drastic, NBC, Accession, CCS, MiniMe, Stone Arts, Infinity, Lightforce, Aphex, R18, Genius, Krema, Ecko, and last but not least, Klone, to name a few, have all provided many quality US and import releases where Echelon may not have had access to the games or interest in releasing them.

The scene was wild and rampant until December when Kalisto and Echelon were expected to release at least one game daily. In January, new releases started coming few and far between, since most of the games that could have been ripped had already been ripped. In mid-February 2001, Sega announced the end of Dreamcast unit production would take place on 31Mar01 citing the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars, and many third party companies scrapped their DC games in development even if they were near completion for more viable platforms, such as the Playstation 2, Nintendo GameCube and Microsoft X-Box. In late March, Sega announced that they were planning on developing Sega games for other platforms, namely the Microsoft X-Box which was a no-brainer since the Dreamcast's inclusion of MS' WinCE. Mar 31 2001 came with a whimper, and the Dreamcast scene continues slowing as the number of slated games decreases...

Dreamcast Emulation - The source for dreamcast emulation, tools and software.

Dreamcast Emulation - The source for dreamcast emulation, tools and software.: "Selfbooting Dreamcast CD-Rs:

Before you read:

This guide is designed for people who are trying to burn the various emulators and neat little programs. (mainly found on www.dcemulation.com) It is NOT for people who are trying to burn illegal dreamcast games. I do not condone such activity, and i will not help anyone who tries to do it. Repeat: THIS IS FOR LEGIT SOFTWARE ONLY. For this reason, the zipfile that accompanies this tutorial does not include the CDDA tools and does not explain how to rip down CDDA tracks to fit on a CD-R

Basic Idea:

For a CD-R to be bootable on the Dreamcast, it must have the correct structure. I know this is well known, as well as the structure itself, but i figured i'd write it down a little clearer for everyone. Also, this guide is for WINDOWS USERS. Everything in it is tested on a Win 98 machine, and can only be confirmed to work on other Win 98 Machines.

Initial Basic Structure:

First, the CD-R has to have two sessions. The first, must be an audio track. This track MUST be at least 4 seconds long, but, it can be longer. This First audio track is what would be equivalent to the 'disk warning' message found on standard GD-ROM disks. Because of this, I recommend getting your MIC out and recording a 'Disk warning' message. The second track has to be a CD/XA track, and must contain a regualar ISO9660 File system. Notse on how to create this will coem later in this document.

Tools:

For making my personal self-boots, i use a combination of several programs. For the actual burning process, I use two, EZ-CD Creator 4, and the Win32 version of CDrecord. EZ-CD Creator came with my CD Burner, and most burners today coem with it as well. If yours didn't, you can Attempt to use your burners program, but i can not guarantee it will work. Still, if you would like to try to use another program besides EZ-CD, I will detail which options you should look for in your program. I'm sure EZ-CD isn't the only one that will work, it's just the only one i've tested at this point, so feel free to experiment. As for CD Record, it is included in the zip file that the text file you are reading now should be found it (along with the other needed programs)

The First Session (Audio Track):"

Sintendo

Sintendo
I have been quite busy as of late. I work 40 hours a week. I have friends and co-workers who I enjoy spending my time with. I come home and either I program or I work on my computer for a few hours and then I sleep. I have a rigorous sleep schedule of 10 hours a night. :)

I have been working, I have been working on Sintendo, I have been researching for Sintendo, et cetera. I have accomplished a few things but I can't say that I have actually finished any one particular aspect of Sintendo that I would like to add to the next release.

Obviously, the most awaited is sound. Sound works, kind of. At the moment, I have sound support taken out because I've grown quite frustrated at it and want to work on a few other things for the moment. SNES sound, however, as you know it, does not work. Only in vague ways does it actually resemble what you would expect to hear, and that's when it doesn't crash. On the Dreamcast, it crashes, and badly at that.

What does work, however, and is quite nifty, is something I designed as a preliminary to the SNES sound. Sintendo can successful play a wav file of any size. The reason for this added functionality is that I wish for Sintendo to be able to have menu music. Menu music would be by no means required. Actually, at the moment, the way I intend for menu music to be implemented is that you may create a 'WAV' directory in the root (right next to 'SNES' and 'WINCE') and this directory may contain any number of songs of any length, so long as they fit on the CD (this is actually quite a restriction). The bad news is that wav's take up a lot of space usually and could easily fill a CD. But, I imagine, you could probably easily fit 20-30 minutes worth of music and still have a very wide selection of SNES roms on the same CD. I may also add an option to continue playing menu music once the SNES has begun playing. The menu music would then be mixed on top of the SNES music as though you were listening to a CD while playing a video game.

Obviously, the exact details of this feature as still uncertain. I thought it more important to move directly into SNES sound after completing wav playing that it would be to have to deal with the intimate details of making menu music operational (such as: playing more than one wav in sequence, or starting or stopping music playback when menus are left or entered).

The one feature nearest completion is background bitmaps. I finally got the Direct3D code to work for showing bitmaps (textures) behind the menu. Due to the colors of certain backgrounds, I have decided to change the general menu color from blue as you are used to it, to a move nuetral black/gray. It is still in transition because I have yet to convert all the icons, arrows, et cetera to match the new color scheme. Even still, background bitmaps add a striking appeal to the menus that a White to Black gradient just couldn't do, and only took me about 2-3 days worth of programming early after my last release. Background bitmaps should certainly be expected with the next release. However, I am having so video memory issues, so I may have to find a better way to hold them in memory or to load them dynamically.

Background bitmaps lead an interesting transition of using the same (or similar) code to render transparencies using the Dreamcast hardware rather than in the Snes9x software, which adds together ever pixel individually, and can be quite slow. Hardware transparencies would render nearly as quickly as Sintendo renders with transparencies disabled, hopefully reducing frameskips by as much as 20 frames per second on averge, and still providing strikingly accurate SNES images. I am still in the middle of programming this, and I have run into a few problems, such as texture rendering not being as accurate as 2D blitting, resulting in more jaggies and awkward edges, taking away from the engraved-in-stone pixelated look and feel of the original SNES. My old code even went a long way to smooth a lot of those pixels using anti-aliasing and actually improving the image quality, while this new code can't even be said to render at the quality of the original SNES. This problem may be solvable as I look into things further.

Lastly, (I believe) someone dropped me a line (I'll look up the name later, or he can drop me a line if he wants credit) about the exact size of many of the larger SNES roms, suggesting that 6 Megs (6,291,456 bytes) plus a few extra buffers for headers should be plenty of space for almost any ROM ever made for the Dreamcast. rather than the 8 Megs which I had previously set. I have since reduced the ROM allocation size to a comfortable 6 Megs, which freed up an additional 2 Megs which I immediately used for allocating enough space for Hi-res game support. Sadly and strangely, code which once rendered hi-res games no longer works properly on hi-res games for unknown reasons as of yet. Normal games run fine, but hi-res support is not yet perfected. I've added it to the list of things which I need to work on.

As far as sight changes go, I've updated this page (obviously), and I'll probably be uploading a new timeline at the same time. I added a few checkmarks, and changed a lot of them over to blue. I've also developed, slightly, a timeline for sound, but it's not particularly well thought out. I still haven't prepared CDRECORD instructions, and the reason for this is because I am searching for a file system structure that mkisofs can prepare that preserves capitalization and special characters, such as spaces or hypens. The normal file system uses all caps and changes spaces, hypens, and a few other characters into underscores, which I find unattractive. If anyone knows of any command line for mkisofs that preserves such characters and capitalization, please drop me a line. Please, however, make sure the burned iso actually plays on the Dreamcast.

I guess that about covers it all for now. Just giving everyone an update and letting people know how things are coming as well as what to expect. As a final note, I still haven't solved the inserting VMUs problem, but I'm considering changing the way Sintendo saves anyways.

Again, I can't promise that I'll update soon, as, you can see, I'm chest deep in a lot of thick code and I'm trying to dig my way out. I need to find some way to relax for a moment or two so that I can, hopefully, come back stronger afterwards. I'll be moving sometime this month, perhaps that'll do the trick. Perhaps not.

I'll update again when a reasonable update is available.

Changing Industry

so the universal music group are lowering their cd prices by $3 in an attempt to get people to start buying cd's again.
it's a good idea, but it might be a case of too little, too late.
if anyone were asking me (and they're not, actually) i would advise the music business to do the following:
1-come up with a standardized platform for file-sharing that all of the labels would provide music to, but that would be owned by an independent 3rd party source.
something like the apple on-line store. when the record companies try to start their own on-line retail services they invariable become proprietary and greedy. at some point the record labels are going to have to realize that you can't expect people to pay a lot of money for something that they can get for free. so:
a-the price needs to come down
b-the value needs to increase
c-the product has to be easy to acquire.
2-sell cd's at two retail prices, kind of like hard-cover and paperback books. sell your basic cd for $5 or $6 with very minimal packaging, and sell an enhanced cd package for $15 that would include bonus discs and posters and free access to on-line material and discounts on concert tickets, etc. that way the casual consumer can buy a cd without it costing too much and the bigger fan can buy a more exciting and value-filled product for slightly more money.
3-stop spending insane amounts of money making records and videos.
the world doesn't need albums that cost more than $100,000 to make, and the world doesn't need videos that cost more than $50,000 to produce.
how much did it cost to make 'nevermind'? how much did the 'smells like teen spirit' video cost? expensive records and expensive videos are a waste of everyone's time and money. it's just insane that most 3 1/2 minute pop videos cost more than a 50 acre estate in north carolina.
4-stop putting out shitty records. people don't associate music with value because most record labels put out valueless music. and they know it. their goal is to get a single on the radio and then put out a crummy album that will sell on the strength of the single with no thought to artistry or artist development. they don't sign artists based on artistic merit, they sign artists if the artists look and sound like the other artists on radio and mtv, and that's a recipe for long-term musical and corporate disaster. if you consistently make a crummy product then at some point people will lose interest in you and your crummy product, and they certainly won't be willing to pay for your crummy product.
5-stop persecuting people who are music fans. people who engage in file-sharing are people who like music. you can't make people feel guilty about loving and listening to music. the record companies need to see people who engage in file-sharing as music fans and not as criminals. and then they need to try to convince people to spend a little bit of money for music (with added value) rather than downloading it for free.
record companies and rich musicians complaining about file-sharing rings terribly false with most people. i mean, how can a 14 year old who has an allowance of $5 a week feel bad about downloading music produced by multi-millionaire musicians and greedy record companies? the record companies should approach that 14 year old and say, 'hey, it's great that you love music, instead of downloading music for free why don't you try this very inexpensive service that will enable you to listen to a lot of music and also have access to unreleased tracks and ticket discounts and free merchandise?'
the record companies and the riaa have up until this point been like nero, fiddling while rome burned (or george bush, vacationing while the economy implodes...). the record companies are faced with an inescapable fact: the music business has changed and will continue to change. if the record companies can't change with the times then they will very quickly become obsolete.
whether that's a good or bad thing, it really is as simple as that.
thanks
moby

WebDev - CSS Layout Templates: "Free CSS Layout Templates

There are a few templates available for download, they are divided into three main groups. The first group is for people who want to recreate common, one, two or three column layouts which are also popular table layout styles. The second group are layouts which are a little bit different and demonstrate how CSS can be used to produce more interesting designs. The third group is targeted at online forums and commenting systems. It tries to combine structural XHTML with CSS to provide an elegantly minimal interface."

WHY DON'T WE HAVE ANSWERS TO THESE 9/11 QUESTIONS?

WHY DON'T WE HAVE ANSWERS TO THESE 9/11 QUESTIONS?: "WHY DON'T WE HAVE ANSWERS TO THESE 9/11 QUESTIONS?

By WILLIAM BUNCH
bunchw@phillynews.com

NO EVENT IN recent history has been written about, talked about, or watched and rewatched as much as the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 - two years ago today.
Not only was it the deadliest terrorist strike inside America, but the hijackings and attacks on New York City's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington were also a seminal event for an information-soaked media age of Internet access and 24- hour news.
So, why after 730 days do we know so little about what really happened that day?
No one knows where the alleged mastermind of the attack is, and none of his accomplices has been convicted of any crime. We're not even sure if the 19 people identified by the U.S. government as the suicide hijackers are really the right guys.
Who put deadly anthrax in the mail? Where were the jet fighters that were supposed to protect America's skies that morning? And what was the role of our supposed allies Saudi Arabia and Pakistan?
There are dozens of unanswered questions about the 2001 attacks, but we've narrowed them down to 20 - or 9 plus 11.
1. What did National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice tell President Bush about al Qaeda threats against the United States in a still-secret briefing on Aug. 6, 2001?
Rice has suggested in vague terms that the president's brief - prepared daily by the CIA - included information that morning about Osama bin Laden's methods of operation - including hijacking. But when the congressional committee probing Sept. 11 asked to see the report, Bush claimed executive privilege and refused to release it."

STUMBLE BUMS

index: "The Band Biography As Told By Big Jim Knouse

Back in the early 80's I was lucky enough to see one of the most unknown bands that no one ever heard of. Country Dick Montana and the Beat Farmers played a variety of dance, country, punk, and rockabilly music and entertained crowded bars up and down the west coast until Dick's untimely death.

Years later, after moving to Texas, I was surprised to meet a friend who not only knew of the Beat Famers but was actually a fan of the music. (Nobody ever heard of these guys!) Well, Guitar Johnny Mathews had an idea. 'How about a tribute band!'

Before you could say 'hubba hubba hubba', John gathered all the ingredients needed for the effort. Big, tall, Eli Schlabach would provide lead vocals. Those mutton chops and sarcastic wit made him the perfect choice. Andy Schlabach came forward with his horns and exceptional musical training to provide the brass and lots of the arrangements. Guitar Johnny's brother, Jamie, played in a hard driving punk band and agreed to provide the bass. John had to go outside the family tree to find a decent drummer and after a couple of tries, found multi-talented Steve Moors to fill the position.

Country Dick and the Beat Farmers are long gone, but the rowdy, hard driving, beer drinkin' music is still valid today and faithfully performed by the Stumble Bums for a brand new audience. These maggots will make you laugh, cry, groan, cheer, drink and sing along. Catch them if you can! I'm sure Country Dick is looking down on these guys from that big tavern in the sky, raising a toast to the Stumble Bums!

Good Luck Guys!
Jim K"

Design Rant

Design Rant: "Can we talk about web design?
Let's. Since I put up that CSS Box Lesson back in March I've been buried with email questions. A root confusion seems to be how we're approaching the web; what we think a web page is, and how this affects our layout choices. A lot of people paint themselves into a corner, quite innocently, and then get very frustrated that their layout won't 'work'.
Here's my thoughts on approach. I don't mean to be dictatorial. I'm just putting down my viewpoint to give people who want it some groundwork to build from."

There aren't many web developers who have not at least tried using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to define typography and simple page attributes such as background and text color. In this article I'll explain why CSS is in many ways preferable to using tables for layout, and then I'll show you some CSS layout techniques using a complete re-coding of the Apple Internet Developer home page as an example."

AAUGH.com interview with Dale Hale

AAUGH.com interview with Dale Hale: "Long after new material started being created to fill comic books, there were still comic books produced the old-fashioned way, featuring color reprints of newspaper strips. Comic strip syndicate United Feature also published comics such as Tip Top, Tip Topper (no Tip Toppest is known to exist, alas) and Fritzi Ritz, filled out with various UF features. Reprints of the then-young strip Peanuts was added to those magazines starting in 1952, and there was a single issue of an all-reprint Peanuts title in 1953. When St. John took over the UF comic book titles in 1955, they continued using the same content, simply re-reprinting the same Peanuts strips that UF had already reprinted.

When Dell Comics took over the line in 1957, however, they chose a completely different direction. Instead of reprinting and re-reprinting newspaper strips, they decided they wanted brand new stories created just for the comic books. Peanuts creator Charles Schulz (known as 'Sparky' to his pals) agreed to have the material generated from his studio, with the help of his talented friends Jim Sasseville and Dale Hale. Beginning with short features in Nancy, Fritzi Ritz, and Tip Top, Dell eventually experimented with having some issues of Four Color bear the Peanuts title. After three of those, Dell moved Peanuts to its own title.

AAUGH.com interviewed Dale Hale in the studio behind his lovely house in Santa Monica, California on Friday, January 7, 2000, about a month before Schulz passed away."

Jim Sasseville: The Ghost in the (Peanuts) Machine

Jim Sasseville: The Ghost in the (Peanuts) Machine: "Whenever asked, Charles Schulz would repeat the statement that became ubiquitous Unlike those involved with other 'assembly-line' newspaper comic strips, he remained the only person whose hands touched the adventures of Charlie Brown and the gang. Schulz wrote, drew, inked and lettered his strip, and did so during the entire run October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000. Schulz always insisted that the strip would cease production when he finally called it quits, a wish that his family has honored. Unlike other classic strips that have been revived, often by lesser talents, 'Peanuts' will forevermore remain solely a Schulz legacy.

Except ... that’s not entirely true.

During the 1950s and early ’60s, Charlie Brown and his friends didn’t just appear in newspaper strips; they also were a popular feature of comic books ... a medium usually dominated by the likes of Superman and Captain America, but one that included plenty of room for lighter fare.

And -- surprise, surprise! -- when the 'Peanuts' comic book appearances stopped being newspaper reprints and 'graduated' into original features in 1957, sharp-eyed fans probably could discern that somebody other than Sparky Schulz was doing the artwork.

To keep the chronology consistent, let’s turn back the clock to 1952, when 'Peanuts' simultaneously debuted as a supporting feature in two comic books -- the March-April issues of Tip Top Comics (#173) and United Comics (#21) -- both published by United Feature Syndicate, which routinely recycled many of its newspaper features in these and other comic books. The 'Peanuts' supporting feature moved into a third book, Tip Topper, beginning with #17 (June-July 1952); it remained there until the book was discontinued after #28 (April-May 1954). Shortl"

YOU ASK IT, WE TELL IT!

Q: What the hell is HITCH?
A: HITCH: The Journal of Pop Culture Absurdity is a magazine. It is fun. It is funny. It’s kind of like Spy meets Entertainment Weekly, by way of Psychotronic.

Q: How long have you been around?
A: HITCH has published on a quarterly basis (more or less) since 1994.

Q: How can I buy back issues?
A: Just go to our secure, PayPal and credit-card friendly store!

Q: How can I get a subscription?
A: Ditto!

Q: Can I have a free copy?
A: No.

Q: Should I make checks payable to HITCH?
A: No, because people who work at banks are mean! Make checks and money orders payable to R. Lott.

Q: Can I find HITCH on the newsstand?
A: HITCH is carried all over the world by Tower Records! Or, if you live in Oklahoma City (a town with no Tower), you can find it at places like Digital Video Depot and Speeding Bullet Books.

Q: Hey, why all the Amazon links on the site? Are you some kind of whore?
A: With postage and paper prices always on the rise, printing HITCH is an expensive gig. And we don’t make money of it (except to buy ourselves a pizza after each issue is done). To keep it going, I can use every penny I get. But, yes, I am a whore.

Q: I’d like to send you something for review. May I?
A: Please do, at our address at left. It is currently our policy to review every CD, video, zine, whathaveyou we receive. As mentioned above, I am a whore.

Q: Do you accept submissions?
A: Yes. As long as you are willing to accept free issues and glory as payment.

Q: Do you know the way to San Jose?
A: Yes, I do.

Animation World Magazine: "Anime Expo 2003: Anime Conventions Enter Their Adolescence
Fred Patten ventured to Anime Expo 2003 and reports back that anime conventions aren’t babies anymore.

September 05, 2003
By Fred Patten

Looking at the estimated 18,000 fans crowding into the Anaheim Convention Center and adjoining Hilton and Marriott hotels for Anime Expo 2003 during the four-day July 4th weekend, it is hard to imagine that the annual AX began with only 1,750 attendees 12 years earlier. The baby has grown up.

Welcome to another world. All photos by Lionel Lum, courtesy Anime Expo.

Anime conventions can trace their gestation back to the first anime videotape room parties held at sci-fi and comic book fan conventions in 1977, a year after the first giant-robot sci-fi adventure cartoons appeared on American Japanese-community TV channels. During the 1980s, anime became an increasingly prominent portion of those conventions, with an anime video room as part of the official programs, fans in anime character costumes in the masquerades and anime merchandise in the dealers’ hall."

Online Fanarts Protection

Online Fanarts Protection
"WHAT IS OFP? :
This is a union made up by Japanese artists to protect (online) artworks from reusing/reproducting by other websites. Of course there are many people who kindly ask for permission to use some pictures...... thanks to those who respect artists' copyrights, but there are also some people who ignore it. We protest ONLY to those people who don't ask for permission when using other's works, so if you have never reused other's fanarts without permission, please go back by your browser "BACK".

"AUTHOR UNKNOWN" MEANS "I STOLE IT" :
We can see many websites using fanarts made by Japanese without permission, and most of the time they are displayed with the word "author unknown"......... But do you think that is allowed? Then full credit is given, is that okay? The answer is NO.
Many think that they are not "stealing" because of the credit, but the authors, WE prohibit reusing without permission, so that will be same as stealing TO US. So if you wish to use others' works, please follow their rules. Before using fanarts, we are asking others to contact the author. Even if you can't read what is said in foreign website, We're sure you can find the webmaster's mail address easily if you look around.
Almost all the people who reuse other's fanarts say when they apologize "Sorry but I can't read in your language, so I couldn't understand that reusing your work was prohibited" But is reusing without permission "common" or allowed in your surroundings? If you couldn't find "reproduction prohibited" text written in YOUR LANGUAGE, do you think that is allowed? Didn't you think of the case that the artists prohibit it in their own language? And in fact, almost all the people are prohibiting their works being reused/reproducted without permission even if it was credited. Please ASK first before you use.

REUSE IS EASY, CREATE IS HARD :
I saw a comment saying: "I don't know why Japanese prohibit their works being reused. If my works were displayed at other sites, I will be proud and flattered" well, but who thinks that way when he/she felt that their own works were stolen?
Why do many artists prohibit reusing by others? Maybe only who creates something by his/her own (fanarts or fanfics) can understand. I think most of the people who use others' fanarts and try to make their website look more "gorgeous" (not by their own ability, but by others') have never created something by themselves.
We are not drawing fanarts for offering works to people who don't even know. We want to make our websites unique and full of originality by displaying the-one-and-only picture, and to show our own works and to entertain guests. We spend many time drawing one fanart, and if that work was reused without asking....... can you imagine what you'll feel? If you can't, just think of the situation that your idea of contents or HP design were stolen by others. Please remember, to download and "reuse" is easy, but to "create" one illustration is very hard.

BE MORE CREATIVE! :
And at last, We'll suggest you all to be more creative! Blosxom (pronounced 'blossom') is a lightweight yet feature-packed weblog application designed from the ground up with simplicity, usability, and interoperability in mind.

Simplicity
Blogging--and, indeed, any online publishing-- should be as simple as typing away in your favourite text editor and hitting Save. Fundamental is Blosxom's reliance upon the file system, folders and files as its content database. Entries are plain text files like any other.

Usability
Create, edit, rename, and delete entries on the command-line, via FTP, WebDAV, or anything else you might use to manipulate your files. There's no import or export; entries are nothing more complex than title on the first line, body being everything thereafter.

Interoperability
Despite its tiny footprint, Blosxom doesn't skimp on features, sporting the lion's share of features one would find in any other Weblog application or full-blown content management and publishing system. Blosxom's plug-in architecture allows the core of Blosxom to remain small and sleek while providing room for extension and integration into different environments and uses. In fact, this entire site is powered by Blosxom; read all about it in the colophon.

Blosxom is simple, straightforward, minimalist Perl affording even the dabbler an opportunity for experimentation and customization.

chaotic intransient prose bursts: "Create a fotolog with MovableType

I got requests to make the templates for my fotolog public, so here goes....

Requirements:

* MTPaginate plugin
* MTGrid plugin

The idea is as follows. Each entry contains a full-sized image and a description. The full-sized image is in the main body of the entry, and the description is the extended body. The excerpt of the entry only contains the thumbnail version of the image. The templates for the fotolog reflect this structure. I also use one more template to get the latest 6 entry thumbnails to display on my main weblog.

Install the plugins, create a new blog in MovableType and download the fotolog template pack. It contains the files, the contents of which you can copy and paste:

* index: this is the 'Main Index' template.
* archive: this is the 'Master Archive Index' template.
* individual: this is the 'Individual Entry Archive' template (there are no monthly or category archive templates).
* styles-site.css: this is the 'Stylesheet' template.
* latest: this is a second optional index template. Create a new index, name it whatever you want, set its output file to something like latest.html, and set its contents to this template. Make sure that this index rebuilds automatically when rebuilding index templates. To include this file in your main weblog, put the following php code in your main weblog's index template: , assuming your main weblog's index file ends in .php.

Editorial: Cassandra Complex - Wishing & Whiskers: "KEEP THAT SMILE ON YOUR PRETTY FACE

So, then. Just what is a Golden Age, anyway?

Ninth Art got a fair amount of stick for the last Triple A article, in which we found it difficult to agree that we are, as Neil Gaiman would have had us believe at this year's Eisner Awards, on the cusp of a new 'Golden Age' of comics.

The objections seemed mostly to follow the non-reasoning that if you express even the slightest disappointment with the state of the medium, you shouldn't be allowed to comment on it. But perhaps people were just confusing the terms 'available' and 'currently being produced'. After all, if the former were the only criteria for a Golden Age, we've been living in movie heaven for the last fifty years or more. Never mind that the majority of current movie output is asinine, lowest-common-denominator fodder.

Anyway. Triple A is an edited version of the transcript to each discussion (partly for space, partly for coherence, and partly so that Andrew can give himself all the best one-liners). And while the onus is on each of us to make our points as succinctly as possible, sometimes the best way of illustrating your point doesn't come to mind until after the tape machine's been switched off. So I thought I'd take the opportunity to elaborate on a few of my remarks, if only to assuage the disparaging comments from Confused of Tunbridge Wells...

First, when I said there weren't enough people reading the more diverse output of today's medium, I'm not just talking about pure sales numbers. No, of course sales numbers alone don't mean anything with regard to a Golden Age. But the problem with these sales numbers is that they indicate a lack of availability, and that's where I start getting depressed. "

Obscenity trial prompts freedom-of-speech outcry

The Japan Times Online:
Obscenity trial prompts freedom-of-speech outcry

By KEIJI HIRANO
Kyodo News

Motonori Kishi was bemused when he was arrested in October on suspicion of distributing obscene material -- despite the fact that his firm's comic books feature uncensored scenes depicting sexual intercourse.
"I did not understand why only our publication was questioned when other publishers have issued unexpurgated sexual comics," the 54-year-old publishing executive said.

Kishi, president of Tokyo-based Shobunkan Co., has been indicted on charges of selling obscene literature.

A cartoonist and the chief editor at Shobunkan were also arrested over their involvement in the writing and distribution of "Misshitsu" ("Honey Room"). They were released after they both paid a 500,000 yen fine based on a summary order.

The sale and distribution of obscene literature is prohibited under Article 175 of the Criminal Code.

Kishi's trial is the first major case in 20 years in Japan to focus on printed pornographic material.

It is, moreover, the first time a comic book has been targeted under the penal code for containing obscene material.

During the trial at the Tokyo District Court, Kishi's lawyers have summoned prominent scholars and critics to argue that Article 175 is unconstitutional.

They said it violates Article 21 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of assembly and association as well as speech, press and all other forms of expression.

It also states that, "No censorship shall be maintained, nor shall the secrecy of any means or communication be violated."

Yasuhiro Okudaira, a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, told the court it is not up to government authorities to judge whether certain material is obscene, and any restrictions on expression are unconstitutional.

"The state power should not prohibit people from accessing certain forms of expressions if they want to," he said.

Shinji Miyadai, an assistant professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University, meanwhile tried to alleviate concerns that pornographic material would have a direct causal impact on children.

He cited the absence of any scientific research showing that pornography alone has a "harmful impact" on youth. He stated that while sales of comic magazines and books, many of which contain sexual material, increased dramatically between 1980 and 1990, the number of juvenile rapists declined during the same period.

Defense lawyer Takashi Yamaguchi said: "If a publication is judged obscene, it becomes impossible for ordinary people to look through it. This means public debate over whether it is obscene is contained and people cannot examine the judgment of the authorities.

"This should not happen in a democratic society."

Yamaguchi added that, even if Article 175 is indeed constitutional, "Honey Room" does not meet the three prerequisites for obscenity as stipulated under a 1957 Supreme Court ruling.

While Article 175 does not clearly define obscenity in legal terms, the top court illustrated these prerequisites in its ruling against the translator and publisher of "Lady Chatterley's Lover" by D.H. Lawrence.

The ruling stated that a certain form of expression should be labeled obscene when it is "unnecessarily sexually stimulating, damages the normal sexual sense of shame of ordinary people, or is against good sexual moral principles."

Yamaguchi said: "At present, we can view foreign hard-core pornographic material online. Who dares to say now that a comic is obscene?"

Over the past decade, the availability of sexual material in Japan has expanded dramatically.

"Hair nude" photos are ubiquitous features of weekly magazines, while major publishers have printed explicit wood block prints from the Edo Period without being targeted. Minors can purchase X-rated videos without having to show identification.

In comic book circles, sexually explicit material has been published for three or four years, Kishi said, adding, "My company is not the front-runner for such extreme publications."

Moreover, Shobunkan publications are enclosed in plastic covers, with booksellers given stickers warning customers about the pornographic content.

These measures, undertaken at the company's expense, are aimed at protecting unsuspecting consumers from being confronted with pornographic material by accident.

Kishi's arrest has impacted the retail book business, with several major book stores having closed their pornography sections, Yamaguchi said.

Scary Godmother

Mainframe's promo site: "Coming Halloween 2003, The Scary Godmother Halloween Spooktakular is based on the comics and children's books of popular artist and writer Jill Thompson who has won numerous awards for her fabulous watercolour paintings and illustrations.

Scary Godmother is a whimsical all-ages story that follows the first trick-or-treating adventure of Hannah Marie, a young girl whose rotten older cousin is babysitting her one dark Halloween. Unhappy to be saddled with Hannah, her cousin cooks up a scheme to frighten her. But his scheme backfires when Hannah gets help from her ScaryGodmother."

I'd rather see this animated in 2D....

Bambi is dead

Bambi is dead - smh.com.au: Hollywood is turning its back on hand-drawn animation in favour of big-selling digital movies. But is this the end for the beautifully painted features of our childhood? Sheila Johnston thinks not.

JAWS dropped in Hollywood recently when Jeffrey Katzenberg announced that he would be producing no more hand-drawn animated movies. 'I think the idea of a traditional story being told using traditional animation is likely a thing of the past,' Katzenberg said.

It was a spectacular U-turn - and perhaps a humiliation - for the man who had made his name at Disney with The Lion King and had set up a studio, DreamWorks, with a mission to reinvent classical animation.

The decision was prompted by the flop of DreamWorks's latest and - it now turns out - final stab at 2D animation, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. But it had been preceded by a long line of failures such as Treasure Planet, Atlantis and Spirit of the Cimarron.

Meanwhile, computer-generated films thrive. Finding Nemo, a comedy about a clown fish, has been this northern summer's hottest ticket in America where it is already among the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time (it took $8.1 million at the Australian box office last weekend - a record opening for an animated film).

DreamWorks is now focusing exclusively on computer-generated animation, with a Shrek sequel and Sharkslayer, a gangster spoof set under the sea.

So, the new Hollywood truism is that Bambi is dead. That kids, hooked on the wizardry of 3D computer games, no longer want to watch quaint, old-fashioned characters against painted backdrops. Yet the film that won this year's Academy Award for best animated feature does not, like the three unsuccessful candidates, come from Hollywood. It is Spirited Away, directed by Japan's 62-year-old master animator, Hayao

Conceived for - and inspired by - a friend's 10-year-old daughter, Spirited Away depicts a sulky little girl's trip to a marvellous world of ghosts and monsters. Miyazaki has a vast cult following among adults.

But kids love his movies, too, even though they are startlingly different from Hollywood's idea of family entertainment. "People at Disney are very, very cautious. They feel children shouldn't be exposed to certain things," says Steve Alpert, an executive at Disney before moving to Ghibli, the Japanese studio where Miyazaki is based.

"Miyazaki feels very strongly that children aren't dumb and that things happening in the world shouldn't be kept from them. There's more respect for what they are able to understand." It seems a paradox that Disney should be distributing all Ghibli's productions in the US.

A chorus of leading American critics has accused Disney of burying Spirited Away with a small-scale arthouse campaign. "There are things we are not satisfied with, certainly," Alpert says. "But we don't think it was a conspiracy to do a bad job." In any case, Disney's dominance is unlikely to continue: Spirited Away is just one example of a remarkable international renaissance in animation.

Told almost entirely without dialogue, Belleville Rendez-Vous, a richly inventive, grotesque but affectionate comedy, was one of the biggest crowd-pleasers in Cannes this year. In the field of model animation, Britain's Nick Park has performed miracles with low-tech Plasticine: a new Wallace and Gromit feature starts filming next month.

None of these films looks (or sounds) anything like a Hollywood movie; but then why should they?

"For a long time, there was just one thing you could see, coming from mainly Disney, and they had a lot of money. It was difficult for European producers to think they could compete," says Belleville's director Sylvain Chomet.

"It's sad DreamWorks didn't try something original before shutting the 2D unit down. But they just did Disney-style stuff. Sometimes not even as good."

At Warner Bros, Joe Dante is the latest to come under pressure. Experienced in all forms of animation (Gremlins 1 and 2; Small Soldiers), he is completing Looney Tunes: Back in Action, which mixes live actors and 2D animation ala Roger Rabbit. Warner Bros hopes to revive interest in Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the other regulars. However, these oddballs come loaded with controversy.

"The difficulty has been just getting the studio to approve of what we are doing," says Dante.

"Because of the child audience, animated features are subject to a great deal more scrutiny than other films. Porky Pig stutters, and that is considered a negative stereotype. Speedy [Gonzalez] was on moratorium for a while, because some groups objected until research showed that in Mexico he's an extremely popular character. Elmer Fudd is a hunter and shoots rabbits. We can't have that after Columbine."

Practitioners blame the obsession with eradicating anything contentious for the crisis in US animation: Dante believes it is responsible for the long delays on Universal's film of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are.

Sinbad notoriously whitewashed its Arabian hero into a dude from Sicily with Brad Pitt's voice.

Computer animation has (so far) been bolder because star artists such as Pixar's John Lassiter have held on to creative control and because these projects attract top writers, drawn by the novelty of the medium and the financial resources available to it.

But, Dante maintains, 2D animation will eventually stage a comeback in Hollywood.

"People have been somewhat spoiled by the high production values of computer-generated films, but the enchantment of watching drawings move on a screen is undiminished. As long as a child can hold a pencil in his hand, there will always be a future for it."
