Pink Lady strut their stuff back in 1977.

Mie, half of the all-girl duo Pink Lady that dominated Japanese music charts in the late '70s (and starred in one of the worst TV shows of all time "Pink Lady and Jeff"), has recently made a habit of stunning her adoring public, according to Shukan Taishu (5/31).

Mie's first shock came with the revelation that her identity had been stolen, a fact she learned after discovering somebody had been withdrawing money by the millions of yen from one of her bank accounts.

Then came an even bigger surprise as the 46-year-old singer let it be known that it took her months to find out she'd been robbed because the thief target a bank account she rarely used to walk off with the 17 million yen - an astounding sum for many considering its owner has hardly seemed to have been in the limelight for nigh on a quarter of a century.

Mie, however, has apparently been quite busy.

"Pink Lady is making more money than most people would think," a producer at a major record label tells Shukan Taishu. "They re-formed last year for a long tour, selling it on the idea that they would be performing exactly the same songs and dances as they did 20 years ago. Their performances were brilliant, almost as though they'd never stopped and they played to full houses every night. Their schedule for year-end shows is already fully booked now. And their wages are A-grade."

On top of the big yen the pair picks up from their regular performances, they can also command top buck on their frequent TV appearances and for endorsing a Pink Lady pachinko machine.

"Of course, she's got to divide all the income together with Keiko Masuda (the other half of Pink Lady), but even then Mie's assets still run into the hundreds of millions of yen," the producer says.

Mie has had some (mostly self-) publicized battles with cash and man burdens in the past, but has also vowed that no matter how often she falls, she plans to treat everything as a learning experience.

"At a concert straight after she announced her divorce in March, Mie thrilled fans by telling them about her new boy toy lover," a sports newspaper desk editor tells Shukan Taishu. "There's no doubt the thefts would have come to a huge shock to her, but, knowing Mie, she'll use it as part of her performing bag of tricks."
