DVHS on a Budget: "A History Lesson
First, a little bit of history about the Super VHS (SVHS) format, which JVC introduced in 1987. This format was an upgrade to the existing VHS format; SVHS was designed to record at a higher horizontal resolution than VHS. The boost to detail came in the luminance domain (a.k.a. the black and white information), while the color resolution was still unchanged from VHS. The horizontal resolution specification for SVHS was greater than 400 lines, compared to VHS, which was only 240 lines. Strangely, the increased detail in the black and white information sulted in an image that looked like the color saturation was low all the time. "

Encyclopedia: VHS: "VHS vs. Betamax

As mentioned, VHS was the winner of a protracted and somewhat bitter format war during the early 80s against Sony's Betamax format. Since Betamax's technical specifications are better on paper, it is often stated that VHS' eventual victory was a victory of marketing over technical excellence. In fact, however, the root causes of VHS' victory are somewhat more complex. Betamax held an early lead in the format war, but by 1980 VHS was gaining due to its longer tape time (2 hours at SP) and JVC's less strict licensing program. Ultimately Betamax did manage to make up the difference on recording time, but this was too little too late for Sony, and Sony ultimately conceded the fight in the late 80s, bringing out a line of VHS VCRs. Beta survived as a professional format, and VHS had no serious competitors in the home video market until the arrival of DVD and digital video recorders. (Other formats such as 8mm and MiniDV have arisen, but have been mainly used for production purposes; neither has ever mounted a serious challenge to VHS's dominance as the set-top format of choice, being relegated to secondary roles.)"

S-VHS: The final shot that killed Beta VCRs: " ED Beta was Sony's last volley in the war over the standard-size VCR. Ads for Beta recorders haven't appeared for years, and the company is now selling VHS recorders with the Sony brand name alongside its Beta machines.
The big gun that shot down Sony's last chance for technical superiority was fired by JVC, its longtime nemesis. While Sony was working on ED Beta, the engineers at Japan Victor Co. were showing prototype versions of a new VHS system to select members of the electronics press.
By the beginning of last year, the Beta-killer went public around the world. The new system, Super VHS, won raves from the testing organizations and consumer magazines.
Super VHS also won on the shelves of retailers throughout North America. Sony's ED Beta VCRs could hardly be found, while the new VHS recorders showed up even at small stores in rural towns. "
